Killin and Ben Lawers

Killin is a real tourist centre, filled with things to do. The mighty Falls of Dochart are a real eye-catcher and popular with visitors, especially those with children or cameras. The Breadalbane Folklore Centre, overlooking the Falls, allows visitors to learn about the Scottish Highlands in more detail, by reading the mythical legends and tales and tracing the history of the Scottish clans, as well as seeing their treasure. There is also a gift shop, so you can buy yourself a little something to remember your visit.

A little way out of Killin, continuing east, is the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve. Ben Lawers itself, Perthshire’s highest mountain, offers stunning views in all directions, from the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea. The range of wildlife in the area is vast; this includes birds such as ptarmigans, ravens and curlews. The Ben Lawers visitor centre has an exhibition that explains the geological formation of Ben Lawers. There is also a nature trail.

 Stirling

Scotland’s sixth largest city, about 50 minutes away from the park, the ancient settlement of Stirling boasts the mighty Stirling Castle – one of the largest and most important fortresses in Scotland – and the towering Wallace Monument, which explains, in great detail, the life and achievements of Scotland’s national hero, William Wallace. Stirling is also a great place for shopping, for instance the large shopping complex known as the Thistles Centre and the smaller Crawford Arcade. The city has an 8-screen ‘Vue’ cinema on the riverside. The Old Town Jail is a great place for visitors, explaining more about crime and punishment in ancient Stirling. Just west of Stirling is the Blairdrummond Safari Park – a great day out for the whole family! Elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, chimpanzees...they have the lot! The Bannockburn Heritage Centre explains how Robert the Bruce triumphed over King Edward II in 1314 and allows visitors to see the battlefield for themselves, as well as a statue of the mounted hero. All these attractions – and more – make the city of Stirling a perfect place for a family day out!
